What is the Universal Exercise Unit?
The spider cage portion of the UEU is a body weight support system that decreases the amount of body weight a child must move against gravity when performing functional activities. With reduced weight against gravity, the child can perform more controlled and independent movements, which decreases pathological and neurological reactions that affect mobility. The pulley system uses weights and pulleys for isolated strengthening of weak muscles to eliminate learned compensations.
The Universal Exercises unit works with belts, bungee cords, pulleys, and weights to offer assistance to its users, allowing them to maintain an upright position while interacting with the world around them. It allows children to stand without the help of parental or therapist assistance and works to facilitate movement and balance through weight-shifting within the device. This system holds the child with bungee cords to a belt around their waist, and through it, children can practice forms of balance, stretching, and muscle support, opening children up to a new set of treatments that impact their gait, balance, and sense of coordination.
